INSIDE ANIMAL MINDS

BIRD GENIUS

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24 @ 9:00PM

When it comes to intelligence, we humans are clearly the most gifted animals around. But what make us so special? Is it our ability to make and use tools? To solve complex problems? Or plan for the future? It might seem that way, but today, researchers are discovering other creatures with impressive brains that have mastered all those skills. Surprisingly, many are bird brains. EPISODE 1 – YOUR INNER FISH

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9 @ 8:00PM

How did your body become the complicated, quirky, amazing machine it is today? Anatomist Neil Shubin uncovers the answers in this new look at human evolution. In the first episode, “Your Inner Fish,” he journeys back to a time, some 375 million years ago, when the first fish crawled up onto land. Shubin’s quest for the fossil record of this primeval predecessor takes viewers from highway cuts in rural Pennsylvania to the remote Arctic.

Eight brothers who were forged into a band as children by their father, Chicago jazz maverick Phil Cohran, now try to march to their own beat on the streets of New York and in the music business as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. The eight young men who make up the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are all sons of Phil Cohran, a legendary Chicago trumpeter who turned his back on commercial music to pursue astral jazz (with the “cosmic philosopher” of jazz, Sun Ra), proto-funk, and a passionately Afrocentric lifestyle. Cohran’s ultimate avant-garde work, however, may have been his own sons, who were raised communally on Chicago’s South Side with Cohran and their two mothers, complete with homemade clothes, veganism, and alternative holidays.

WITH GWEN IFILL

FRIDAY, APRIL 4 @ 9:00PM

The Supreme Court issued a major campaign finance decision this week striking down some limits on federal campaign donations. The ruling comes four years after the court opened the door to unlimited political spending with its Citizens United decision. Supporters say striking down limits is a victory for free speech while critics say the ruling will provide a gateway to corruption. While the debate rages on, the court’s ruling is expected to dramatically change the political landscape ahead of the 2014 midterm and 2016 presidential elections.
