Lady Agnes Holland decides to take the children away to keep them safe, but the real motive may be her exasperation with her marriage. Sir Hallam, bereft by her absence, sees the consequences of not acting sooner to improve things, while at the same time, still continuing to make them worse.

Downstairs, excitement brims over at the prospect of Lady Malcom’s Ball, and a new romance blossoms as a result. Another relationship is solidified, and a dream pursued, but in the face of war, ambitions are easily thwarted.
