The 2020 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song honoree is Garth Brooks. Since his break out in 1989, Garth Brooks has become the most successful solo artist in U.S. history – trailing only the Beatles in total album sales. With his unmistakable infusion of rock and pop elements into country music, Brooks helped usher in a country boom in the early 1990’s that elevated an entire genre and created a slew of new stars that continue to top the country charts.
