EPISODES 1 & 2

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21 @ 6:00PM

Episode 1: La Famiglia Roots (1880 – 1910)

A brief history of the Italian Risorgimento provides the context for the great flight from the mezzogiorno region, as well as the roots of the first generation’s distinctive psychology. Through the travels of Italian migrant workers, we understand the transnational nature of these “Birds of Passage.” By the late 19th century, Italians begin to put down roots. “Little Italy’s” spring up in urban areas throughout the U.S. But the first generation holding onto their language and culture are branded as “outsiders” and mistrusted by non-Italians.

Leonard Covello is forced to give up his “old world” ways and adapt American mores, including changing his name; Arturo Giovannitti, a new immigrant to America, leads the largest labor strike of 1912, where Italian Americans push for better working conditions and decent wages.

ROMEO & JULIET WITH JOSEPH FIENNES

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14 @ 7:00PM

Fiennes has a unique perspective on Romeo and Juliet. He played Shakespeare – both writing and performing as Romeo – in the film Shakespeare in Love. Now he wants to examine why it remains the most-performed of all Shakespeare plays.

Fiennes takes us back to the source – an Italian story translated into English when Shakespeare was a boy. Shakespeare adapted and dramatized the Italian poem, and other writers have been adapting him for centuries ever since. At London’s Royal Ballet, viewers see the play in a famous dance interpretation, and later Stephen Sondheim discusses adapting for the Broadway musical theater as West Side Story. Fiennes visits adult night classes at a South London school where the participants can see their own lives reflected in the play.

They help the scientists reveal the forest’s deepest scientific secrets. But seeing how people live here without destroying the forest leads Sanjayan to a startling discovery by archaeologists. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 @ 7:00PM & 12:00AM

By the dawn of the 19th century, the deadliest killer in human history, tuberculosis, had killed one in seven of all the people who had ever lived. The battle against the deadly bacteria had a profound and lasting impact on the country. It shaped medical and scientific pursuits, social habits, economic development, western expansion, and government policy. Yet both the disease and its impact are poorly understood: in the words of one writer, tuberculosis is our “forgotten plague.”
