THE FUNKIEST MONKEYS

SUNDAY. NOVEMBER 19 @ 10:00PM

There is an unusual looking monkey called the crested black macaque that is endemic to rainforests in Indonesia, which includes the island of Sulawesi. These striking black primates, sporting punk hairstyles and copper-colored eyes, first caught the attention and won the heart of wildlife cameraman and biologist Colin Stafford-Johnson 25 years ago. But since then, their numbers have dropped by almost 90 percent, so the filmmaker returns to the island to discover why and how he could help.

WITH GWEN IFILL

FRIDAY, JUNE 12 @ 9:00PM

Just days after President Obama acknowledged military setbacks in Iraq, the administration announced it will deploy 450 American military personnel to the region to support a battered Iraqi army.   The U.S. training mission is intended to help Iraqi forces devise a counterattack strategy against the Islamic State extremists who have seized control of Anbar province.  Nancy Youssef of The Daily Beast will explain why Republicans and some Democrats are skeptical and concerned that sending additional non-combat reinforcements will lead to “mission creep.”

A NOVA SPECIAL PRESENTATION

SURVIVING THE TSUNAMI

SATURDAY, JUNE 5 @ 11:00PM

The earthquake that hit the northern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011 was recorded at magnitude 9.0—the worst ever recorded in Japan. It generated an unprecedented tsunami, obliterating coastal villages and towns in a matter of minutes. In some areas, the tsunami climbed over 100 feet in height and traveled miles inland. Amazingly, amateur and professional photographers captured it all on video, including remarkable tales of human survival, as ordinary citizens became heroes in a drama they never could have imagined.

THE RISING ROAD

THURSDAY, APRIL 23 @ 7:00PM & 11:00PM

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1933 presidential inauguration comes during the nation’s worst economic crisis – the Great Depression. Banks have failed and savings accounts have been wiped out, so to explain the banking system and how it works, Franklin Roosevelt gives his first “fireside chat” to the American people. In fourteen and a half minutes he calms the public, and by the next Monday people begin to redeposit their money, thereby averting a crisis. This begins his first one hundred days in office, the most productive in presidential history. Fifteen major bills are passed, social programs are instituted, and the federal government – which up to this point has been a mostly passive observer of the people’s problems – becomes an active force in trying to solve them. Eleanor Roosevelt takes to her new role as First Lady with energy and purpose.
