Donald Trump has defied conventional wisdom to become the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. With no political experience, the New York businessman and reality TV star vanquished 16 GOP presidential rivals.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is also chairman of the Republican National Convention, said Thursday he is “not ready” to endorse Mr. Trump as the party’s nominee. Other conservative lawmakers have said they will support Trump but will not endorse him. That leaves the billionaire with the daunting task of asking the Republican Party establishment to not only support his national campaign but to help him unite a divided party.
