WHAT PLANTS TALK ABOUT

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26 @ 7:00PM & 11:00PM

When we think about plants, we don’t often associate a term like “behavior” with them, but experimental plant ecologist JC Cahill wants to change that. The University of Alberta professor maintains that plants do behave and lead anything but solitary and sedentary lives. “They’re actively engaging with the environment in which they live,” Cahill insists. “They actively communicate. They actively respond to the nutrients, and the predators, and the herbivores that are around them. It’s a really dynamic system.” By exploring the fascinating behaviors of plant life, including the dodder vine, wild tobacco plant, and Douglas fir, What Plants Talk Aboutteaches us all that plants are smarter and much more interactive than we thought!

A LIFE OF GRAHAM GREENE

FRIDAY, MARCH 29 @ 11:30PM

Dangerous Edge is a remarkable portrait of a great writer. It explores how Graham Greene’s life both inspired great writing and drove him to attempt suicide. He was a British spy, a doubting Catholic, and a manic-depressive who wrote critically acclaimed best selling novels, including The Quiet American, Brighton Rock, The End of the Affair and The Third Man. This documentary weaves Greene’s novels and movies into the story of his life: the struggle between good and evil… love and betrayal; it reveals an extraordinary man who traveled the globe to escape the boredom of ordinary existence and became a writer addicted to danger. At 2.5 million acres, it is larger than Yellowstone, yet most people have never even heard of it. Designated a federally-protected wilderness in 1980 by Congress, the region is full of deep canyons and mountain forests, rivers and abundant wildlife. Otters and elk, deer and coyotes, blue birds and bighorn sheep, and newly-restored wolf populations all thrive there. Today, nine packs of wolves roam freely through the park, each pack dependent on family — raising their young and hunting together.

TAVIS SMILEY REPORTS

EDUCATION UNDER ARREST

THURSDAY, MARCH 28 @ 7:00PM & 12:00AM

“(Our goal) is to prevent at risk youth from dropping out of school and to provide dropouts and youth returning from correctional facilities with a support system to ensure their continued education.”
Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, Department of Education

Many public schools are still operating under the 1999 “Zero Tolerance” initiative, which tied federal funding to this mandate. “Zero Tolerance,” which came about after the horrifying Columbine tragedy, demands that kids be removed from schools the first time they transgress—even for minor offenses. This puts them into the juvenile justice system—a system that those who work within its confines admit too often does a better job of punishment than rehabilitation and re-integration into schools.
