WHY WE LOVE CATS AND DOGS

catsanddogs

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8 @ 8:00PM

Some people are cat people, some are dog people. But regardless of which camp they fall into, most people are simply crazy about their pets. The connections people form with their cats and dogs are often the longest, strongest relationships in their lives. They are our soul mates, our best friends, sometimes even our surrogate children. What makes these creatures such key members of our families?

Perhaps it’s because our furry friends have long provided us with comfort, camaraderie, and unconditional love. Cats and dogs are our unending source of kisses, cuddles, slobber, claws, and laughs.

MANY RIVERS TO CROSS

A MORE PERFECT UNION (1968–2013)

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26 @ 9:00PM

After 1968, African Americans set out to build a bright new future on the foundation of the civil rights movement’s victories, but a growing class disparity threatened to split the black community in two. As hundreds of African Americans won political office across the country and the black middle class made unprecedented progress, larger economic and political forces isolated the black urban poor in the inner cities, vulnerable to new social ills and an epidemic of incarceration.

WITH GWEN IFILL

THIS WEEK: SENATE’S “NUCLEAR OPTION”

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22 @ 9:00PM

The Senate went nuclear on Thursday. After threatening for months, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) orchestrated a new rule allowing for the confirmation of judicial nominees with a simple 51-vote majority. President Obama applauded the change calling out Republicans for stalling the confirmation of his nominees in what he called a “pattern of obstruction [that] just isn’t normal.” Republicans fumed that the rule change was a power grab designed to deflect the focus away from the rocky implementation of the president’s Affordable Care Act.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

JFK

TUESDAY, AUGUST 9 @ 10:00PM

Forever enshrined in myth by an assassin’s bullet, Kennedy’s presidency long defied objective appraisal. Recent assessments have revealed an administration long on promise and vigor, and somewhat lacking in tangible accomplishment. His proposals for a tax cut and civil rights legislation, however, promised significant gains in the months before his assassination. While maturation, as evidenced in the handling of the Cuban missile crisis, was apparent, the potential legacy of the New Frontier will forever be left to speculation.

COMET ENCOUNTER

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20 @ 11:00PM

Comets have fascinated, even terrified us for thousands of years. For scientists though, comets are a great opportunity. This year, 2013, a particularly massive chunk of ice and rock is coming our way, an object that will fascinate billions and should create the space show of the century. Right now Comet ISON, somewhere between one and 10 kilometers in diameter, is just beyond the orbit of Jupiter. As it races past us toward the sun it should develop a tail that will light up the skies brighter than a full moon.

MANY RIVERS TO CROSS

RISE! (1940-1968)

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19 @ 9:00PM

Rise! examines the long road to civil rights, when the deep contradictions in American society finally became unsustainable. Beginning in World War II, African Americans who helped fight fascism abroad came home to face the same old racial violence. But this time, mass media — from print to radio and TV — broadcast that injustice to the world, planting seeds of resistance. And the success of black entrepreneurs and entertainers fueled African-American hopes and dreams.

LINCOLN@GETTYSBURG

gettysburg

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 @ 10:00AM

In 1863 Abraham Lincoln proved himself a master of a new frontier—not on the battlefields of the Civil War, but in his high-tech command center: the War Department Telegraph Office, America’s first Situation Room. The Internet of the 19th century, the telegraph, gave Lincoln new powers to reshape leadership and wield personal control across distant battlefields.
