At the Cabildo building in the historic French Quarter, the team serves up a pot of genealogy gumbo in what is now home to the Louisiana State Museum. A couple whose ancestors hail from the same small Italian town explore the chance they may be related; a woman is desperate to find out who committed a gruesome murder in her ancestor’s past; a home held by one family for more than a century renders a fascinating story; and a woman discovers the difficult journey her ancestor took on the path to freedom from slavery.

EVOLUTION OF A CRIMINAL

In examining a bank robbery committed by Texas high school students, Darius Clark Monroe’s film interweaves suspenseful reenactment footage with candid interviews from people involved in every angle of the crime. The twist? The filmmaker himself was one of the men involved in the robbery.

In Evolution of a Criminal, filmmaker Monroe explores what led him to pull a heist as a teenager in Texas, and returns to the scene of the crime. By interviewing family members, close friends, and mentors, we learn about his transformation from a joyous childhood to the moment he realized the severity of his family’s financial problems, and how their struggles changed his outlook on his own life.

The manhunt continues across France for two brothers suspected in the deadly attack on the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Twelve people were killed and eleven more wounded in the terrorist attack. A third suspect surrendered to police on Wednesday.

French law enforcement officials say suspect Cherif Kouachi was convicted of terrorism in 2008 and served 18-months in prison. Both he and his younger brother Said are considered “armed and dangerous.” Investigators are trying to determine if the gunmen are linked to al Qaeda, ISIS, another terrorist organization or if the Paris massacre was a case of a “lone wolf” attack.

LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame during the Great Depression, transforming himself from a skinny loner into a flashy entertainer who presented to the nation a blend of freakish oddities, colorful exotica, and homespun Americana. Over three decades, his “Believe It or Not!” franchise grew into an entertainment empire, expanding from newspapers to every form of 20th century “new media”: radio, film and, ultimately, television. Americans not only loved his bizarre fare, but also were fascinated by the man himself.

THE KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH

Still renowned as the richest gold strike in North American mining history, the Klondike Gold Rush set off a “stampede” of over 100,000 people on a colossal journey from Alaska to the gold fields of Canada’s Yukon Territory between 1896 and 1899.

It’s an incredible story of determination, luck, fortune and loss. The boomtown Dawson City emerges as the heart of the story. During the gold rush, it’s known as the “Paris of the North,” and is one of the largest cities in Canada. Filled with banks, saloons, stores and hotels, for the stampeders and the outside world, it confirms itself as a place where lives can in fact be revolutionized.
