SINKHOLES – BURIED ALIVE

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26 @ 10:00PM

In a leafy suburb near Tampa, Florida, on February 28, 2013, a giant hole opened up under the bedroom floor of Jeffrey Bush, swallowing him as he slept. His body was never found. Bush was a victim of a sinkhole—a worldwide hazard that lurks wherever limestone and other water-soluble rocks underpin the soil. When carbon dioxide from the air dissolves in rainwater, it forms a weak acid that attacks soft rocks, riddling them with holes like Swiss cheese. Sinkholes can occur gradually when the surface subsides into bowl shaped depressions or suddenly when the ground gives way. These geological hazards have swallowed highways, apartment buildings, horses, camels, even golfers, with monster-size holes cracking the earth from Siberia to Louisiana.

HONG KONG

MONDAY, OCTOBER 19 @ 8:00PM

Would you eat a century old egg? The idea of eating anything that old—let alone an egg—may be off-putting. But the name of this Chinese delicacy (along with its many other nicknames, like millennium egg and thousand-year old egg) is a misnomer. It takes anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to prepare the eggs, far less than the name purports.

To make century old eggs, duck, chicken or quail eggs are preserved in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls. The chemicals present in the process turn the yolk a dark grey-green color and the egg white a translucent brown. When the aging process is complete, the eggs can be eaten on their own or used as an ingredient in a dish.

WITH GWEN IFILL

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 @ 9:00PM

The five Democratic White House hopefuls squared off in Las Vegas in their first debate of Campaign 2016. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders dominated the discussion, trading jabs over Sanders’ position on gun control and Clinton’s evolving position on the Keystone XL-Pipeline proposal. But there was also agreement on one key issue: the controversy over Clinton’s emails when she was Secretary of State. “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails,” Sanders said in defense of Clinton.

For analysis and perspective of the Democratic debate, the issues Republicans and Democrats are talking about on the campaign trail, the latest campaign financing reports and the president’s announcement to delay the full withdrawal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
