THOMAS PAINE

TO BEGIN THE WORLD

MONDAY, JULY 11 @ 11:00PM

Thomas Paine is a man largely forgotten and greatly misunderstood, ironically quoted by all and every political faction in America today. Yet his ideas about democracy, equality, slavery, pensions, healthcare, education and morality would have created a very different kind of nation if they had been acted on. He was a man who changed the world, only to have the world he changed turn its back on him. The man who ignited revolutions would die largely ignored and distained, but when he was writing his books he was at the epicenter of world events, literally transforming nations through the power of his words. All the triumphs and tragedies of his life are here in this film of a live performance of the acclaimed one-man play To Begin the World Over Again: the Life of Thomas Paine, shot in front of a live audience at the Lillian Theatre, Hollywood.

LIFE

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28 @ 11:00PM

How did life emerge on our primeval continent? Why was North America home to so many iconic dinosaurs like T. rex? And how did a huge sea filled with giant marine reptiles end up covering Kansas? We tell the surprising intertwined story of life and the landscape in North America.

Mighty, elemental forces molded North America—fiery eruptions, titanic floods, the grinding of great ice sheets, and massive impacts from space all shaped our homeland. The epic three-part series unfolds in a forgotten world that existed long before our own, crossed by long-lost mountain ranges, deserts the size of Africa, and vast inland seas spanning the length of the continent.

In this episode we see how nature has pushed the basic flying body plan to extremes. How do the heaviest animals take off, the fastest use speed as a weapon, or those traversing the widest oceans do so with barely a wing beat?  All these record breakers push physics and physiology to the limit, but although each one employs a different aerodynamic mix of speed, maneuverability, endurance and power it allows them all, in their own unique way, to become true masters of the sky.
