The performance includes both classic sacred holiday music such as “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen,” as well as festive seasonal songs such as “Carol of the Bells” and “We Need a Little Christmas,” to name a few.

The theater fills to capacity. The house lights dim. From seemingly everywhere comes the soothing sound of over 500 voices in perfect blend with a symphony orchestra as the students of Luther College envelop the audience for the start of Christmas at Luther: Tidings of Comfort and Joy.

Christmas at Luther is a decades old institution at Luther College. Christmas celebrations were begun as Juletide and featured performances of Handel’s Messiah.

Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913 is a new documentary that focuses on the 100th anniversary of an epic labor strike that devastated Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Copper Country – and haunts the American labor movement to this day. Among the notable elements of that strike was the death of 73 children at a union Christmas party in what is now Calumet, Michigan. Known as the Italian Hall Disaster, it remains the deadliest unsolved manslaughter in U.S. history.

Official jobs figures released Friday show more than 200-thousand jobs were added in November and the unemployment rate dropped to 7-percent—among the strongest months for job growth in 2013. And while the job market appears to be steadying, wages for many workers remain stagnant. President Obama spoke out this week about income inequality and the need to increase the Federal minimum wage calling the growing gap between the rich and poor “a fundamental threat to the American dream.” David Wessel of The Wall Street Journal will have analysis of the latest economic indicators and explain what they reveal about the stability of the U.S. Recovery.
