NOCTURNE: The Oxford Police force is swept up in the 1966 World Cup semifinals, but Endeavour Morse is more interested in a 100-year-old series of unsolved murders by croquet mallet, and its potential connection to the killing in a local museum of a retiree by ceremonial dagger.

Written by Inspector Lewis creator and Inspector Morse writer Russell Lewis, Nocturne stars Shaun Evans as young Endeavour Morse, Roger Allam as Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, alongside series regulars Abigail Thaw (daughter of Inspector Morse star John Thaw) and Anton Lesser, with Shvorne Marks as Endeavour’s new neighbor, Monica.

CELEBRATING LOUISIANA MUSIC

It’s been recorded by 350 artists in 30 languages, been a hit in four different decades and featured in dozens of movies, but “You Are My Sunshine” holds a special place in the hearts of Louisiana’s citizens because it was made famous by Jimmie Davis, who served two terms as Louisiana’s governor. In addition, it was named the state song of Louisiana in 1977.

America’s favorite Independence Day celebration will feature unrivaled performances from some of the country’s best-known musical artists, topped off by the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. Twenty television cameras will be stationed around Washington, D.C. to capture the sights and sounds of the concert, making at-home viewers feel like they are front and center for the show.

This year’s A Capitol Fourth on PBS welcomes back host Tom Bergeron and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly.

GHOSTS OF MURDERED KINGS

In the rolling hills of Ireland’s County Tipperary, a laborer harvesting peat from a dried-up bog spots the remnants of a corpse and stops his machine just in time, revealing a headless torso almost perfectly preserved and stained dark brown by the bog. Archeologists recognize the corpse as one of Europe’s rare bog bodies: prehistoric corpses flung into marshes with forensic clues often suggesting execution or human sacrifice. The corpse will eventually be dated to the Bronze Age, over 3,000 years ago. Many of these were victims of shocking violence, showing evidence of axe blows, hanging, and stab wounds.

EGYPTIAN PYRAMIDS

With cutting-edge technology that can “read” buildings, ruins and landscapes from ancient worlds, this series reveals physical and forensic history, allowing viewers to reach out and touch the past.

The team travel to Egypt to scan the pyramids – the tombs of the mighty Pharaohs. They want to find out how evolved from simple mud-brick structures to the most impressive buildings in the ancient world. They use their cutting-edge laser technology to scan Djoser’s Step Pyramid at Saqqara, Meidum’s collapsed pyramid, the mysterious Bent Pyramid at Dashur and the world famous Great Pyramid at Giza.
