Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts. Contemporary comics, including Chelsea Handler, Mo’Nique, Sarah Silverman, Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Lynch and Kathy Griffin, talk about where women started in this competitive, male-dominated profession and where they are determined to go.

Filmed at the historic Warner Theater in Washington, DC, the program will honor recipients of the 27th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards. Honorees include celebrities, physicians, scientists, educators, innovators, public officials and community and business leaders selected by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. The awards, established by the White House in 1987 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S., are considered among the highest honors for Latinos by Latinos and recognize notable Latinos who have had a positive impact on America and the world in various fields.

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET IN CONCERT.

For more than a dozen years now the New York Philharmonic has featured an annual presentation of one of the glories of Broadway’s American musical theater canon. In the year 2000 it was Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.” So successful were those performances that it was decided to bring back “Sweeney Todd” in a stunning recreation for 2014, conducted this time by the Philharmonic’s Music Director, Alan Gilbert, and starring, in the title role, opera’s reigning bass-baritone, Bryn Terfel, and with two-time Oscar winner, Emma Thompson, as Todd’s helpmate, Mrs.Lovett. This remarkable performance will be our Live From Lincoln Center offering on September 26, 2014.
