On July 4, 2012, scientists at the giant atom smashing facility at CERN announced the discovery of a subatomic particle that seems like a tantalizingly close match to the elusive Higgs Boson, thought to be responsible for giving all the stuff in the universe its mass. Since it was first proposed nearly fifty years ago, the Higgs has been the holy grail of particle physicists: in finding it they validate the “standard model” that underlies all of modern physics and open the door to new discoveries when CERN’s giant collider switches on at higher power in 2015.

This film explores how the domestication of dogs might have taken place, including the theory of biologist Raymond Coppinger that it was the animals themselves — and human trash — that inspired the transformation. The genetic analysis of Peter Savolainen of the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden has placed the origins of domesticated dogs — and those of the first dog — in East Asia.

In examining a bank robbery committed by Texas high school students, Darius Clark Monroe’s film interweaves suspenseful reenactment footage with candid interviews from people involved in every angle of the crime. The twist? The filmmaker himself was one of the men involved in the robbery.

In Evolution of a Criminal, filmmaker Monroe explores what led him to pull a heist as a teenager in Texas, and returns to the scene of the crime. By interviewing family members, close friends, and mentors, we learn about his transformation from a joyous childhood to the moment he realized the severity of his family’s financial problems, and how their struggles changed his outlook on his own life.

The manhunt continues across France for two brothers suspected in the deadly attack on the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Twelve people were killed and eleven more wounded in the terrorist attack. A third suspect surrendered to police on Wednesday.

French law enforcement officials say suspect Cherif Kouachi was convicted of terrorism in 2008 and served 18-months in prison. Both he and his younger brother Said are considered “armed and dangerous.” Investigators are trying to determine if the gunmen are linked to al Qaeda, ISIS, another terrorist organization or if the Paris massacre was a case of a “lone wolf” attack.
