NOVA

SUNKEN SHIP RESCUE

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30 @ 10:00PM

Follow the epic operation to secure, raise, and salvage the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which ran aground and tragically capsized off the coast of Italy on January 13, 2012, killing 32 people. The massive wreck—with a 160-foot-long hole in its hull—stretches the length of three football fields, weighs 45,000 tons, and was half submerged on the site of a protected reef. Moving it from its precarious perch on the edge of an underwater cliff turned into a technical and logistical challenge of staggering proportions. Join NOVA as we follow a team of more than 500 divers and engineers working around the clock as they attempt the biggest ship recovery project in history.

RACHEL CARSON

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

TUESDAY, MAY 28 @ 6:00PM & 10PM

Featuring the voice of Mary-Louise Parker as the influential writer and scientist, Rachel Carson is an intimate portrait of the woman whose groundbreaking books revolutionized our relationship to the natural world. When Silent Spring was published in September 1962 it became an instant bestseller and would go on to spark dramatic changes in the way the government regulated pesticides. Drawn from Carson’s own writings, letters and recent scholarship, the film illuminates both the public and private life of the soft-spoken, shy scientist who launched the modern environmental movement.

INDEPENDENT LENS

THE WITNESS

MONDAY, DECEMBER 9 @ 10:00PM & 11:30PM

The name Kitty Genovese became synonymous with bystander apathy after The New York Times reported that 38 witnesses watched her being murdered in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York – and did nothing to help. This version of events went largely unchallenged for half a century. The horrifying implications of the Times story reached across the city and the country, and would eventually impact lawmakers and lecture halls across the globe. At home, determined to prove he wasn’t like the witnesses who watched and did nothing, Kitty’s younger brother Bill Genovese, who was quite close to his big sister, volunteered to serve in Vietnam where he would lose both his legs in combat. More than 50 years later, The Witness follows Bill’s dogged search for the truth as he attempts to find out for himself what actually took place that fateful night of March 13, 1964.

GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW

MASTERCLASS 4

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21 @ 9:00PM

In the final masterclass of the series, Mary and Paul heat up the ovens and get out the mixing bowls one last time to create the signature, technical and showstopper challenges from the last part of The Great British Baking Show.

Mary makes a Tennis Cake based on the 19th century recipe that was the technical challenge from Victorian week. Paul makes two types of Cream Horns – the first filled with with a Mocha crème pat and the rest with a Limoncello Tutti Frutti Cream. Mary shows us how to be delicate, precise and perfect with her Mokatines and Paul gets to grips with an epic construction in choux pastry – le Religieuse a l’Ancienne.
