VIENNA PHILHARMONIC SUMMER NIGHT CONCERT 2017

Fairy tales, myths, legends and sagas are closely entwined with many composers and compositions. They have served as inspiration, models and sources for many musical works, several of which have been selected for this concert. Some are new and some are old; some are German, Bohemian, and Russian; some are based on literary models and one is a composer’s opinion about a myth.

The concert soloist is renowned soprano Renée Fleming who performs two arias from operas by Antonin Dvořák: the famous ‘Song to the Moon’ of the water nymph Rusalka and the aria of the sorceress Armida from the operas of those names, as well as three songs by Sergei Rachmaninoff: “Twilight,” “Sing not to me, beautiful maiden” and “Spring Waters.”

TWO TOWNS OF JASPER

In 1998 in Jasper, Texas, James Byrd, Jr., a black man, was chained to a pick-up truck and dragged to his death by three white men. The town was forever altered, and the nation woke up to the horror of a modern-day lynching. In Two Towns Of Jasper, two film crews, one black and one white, set out to document the aftermath of the murder by following the subsequent trials of the local men charged with the crime. The result is an explicit and troubling portrait of race in America, one that asks how and why a crime like this could have occurred.

Tensions escalated between the United States and North Korea after U.S. intelligence agencies assessed North Korea has successfully miniaturized a nuclear warhead that could fit on a missile capable of reaching Chicago. President Trump warned Kim Jong-un of the “fire and fury” the United States would unleash if his government continues its nuclear posturing. North Korean military leaders dismissed the warning as a “load of nonsense” and threatened to launch missiles at the American territory of Guam, home of the B-1 bombers the Pentagon would potentially use to attack North Korea’s missile sites.

RESURRECTING RICHARD III

In 2011, a group of amateur historians made an incredible archaeological find: the bones of King Richard III, hunchbacked, with an arrow through the spine. Richard is thought of as the most evil king to have ruled England and also as a fearsome warrior, despite the extreme curvature of his spine. Now, scientists are testing the bones to find out more about the king and also conducting fascinating experiments to determine whether Richard could have fought so ferociously in battle with such a severe deformity.
